We don't set an alarm at weekends so I was a little surprised to hear "First Steps" by Elbow coming from somewhere near my head at 7.30am this morning. After a moment or two, I remembered that I'd set it last Saturday night to ensure I got up for a swim. It's therefore just as well the alarm went off, or I may not have made it to the pool at all. (The choice of music was left over from our day trip to Lindon last August that Stellian blogged about here).
Exercise today was going to serve multiple purposes, to get fit and to burn off last night's food. (A chippy tea was followed by the last tin of chocolate biscuits from Christmas).
On leaving the house, I was pleased to see that no new snow had fallen and the car didn't need to be defrosted, which meant the roads were still clear as well. I was the second person into the pool, so I was able to use a variety of strokes before the pool started to fill up and I switched to breast stroke so I could play dodgems as necessary.
For once, my maths was good enough to work out how far I'd swum. 116 lengths saw me just pass the 2.5km mark in a touch under 70 minutes.
On leaving the pool, I found that it had started to snow again and after freshening up at home, it was time for a walk to church. I pretty much slid onto the canal towpath even though I had my walking boots on. I was running a little late so I didn't stop to take any photos (there was an upside down trolley that had been frozen into the canal with just its wheels showing that I thought could have made an arty shot). By the time the service had finished, the snow was even heavier so I accepted a lift part of the way home. Even so, it's still exercise I wouldn't usually have done so it all counts!
